Course information

Background and introduction

Mental Mapping is a cognitive process where an individual creates a mental map of their personal geographic journey through the surroundings of their local community.  It is a subjective process, and comprises the recalling and decoding of local landmarks, cultural biases and their own personal experiences of living within the local community. It aims to help the participant to visually connect, structure and memorise abstract concepts that impact us as community dwellers.  The aim of these workshops is to stimulate ideas by promoting discussion through the process of making art.

Course content

A series of five workshops (4.5 hours each) supporting the participants in the creation of individual artworks that document a journey (or journeys) made through Wimborne.

The images that make up the finished artworks can incorporate any chosen media (or combination of media) ; from sketches, photography, photo-montage, painting, text, collage etc.

Primarily we will be looking at how visual language can be used to express aspects of the journey that hold particular resonance, or significance for the individual.

Participants will have the opportunity to exhibit their finished work at an exhibition in the Minster at the end of the year.

The workshops are on the following dates and times and take place at Walford Mill Crafts (Wimborne) :-

·       Sunday 4th Oct. 11 am to 3.30 pm

·       Sunday 11th Oct. 11 am to 3.30 pm

·       Saturday 31st Oct. 10 am to 4.30 pm

·       Sunday 1st Nov. 11 am to 3.30 pm

·       Sunday 8th Nov. 11 am to 3.30 pm

Please note, it is not essential to attend every workshop, though we would strongly recommend attending the majority

Cost £95-00 (includes all five workshops and the opportunity to exhibit the completed artwork at the Minster)
